Forensic Medicine Associates, Inc. (FMA) is the contracted division of the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office. FMA employs the scientific staff. Our team of board-certified forensic pathologists, pathologists' assistants, forensic technicians, and administrative staff work collaboratively to conduct comprehensive investigations into sudden, unexpected, or suspicious deaths. 

Dr. Gowitt established Forensic Medicine Associates, Inc. in 1994. Because of increasing civil consultations and demand for private autopsies, a separate independent company (apart from his official duties as a medical examiner) was needed to address the case load, management of scheduling and revenue. It began with three part-time employees: Dr. Gowitt, an autopsy technician, and an administrative assistant. 

The company has grown to have over 20 full-time employees and multiple contracted staff. We now provide forensic pathology services for several coroner-based counties in Georgia and perform over 125 private autopsies and civil consults annually. FMA is located at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office (DCMEO) in Decatur, Georgia just outside of Atlanta. 

The practice emphasis is on civil issues. We do not review criminal or potentially criminal deaths. Our clients include decedent families, hospitals and attorneys.
