Forensic Medicine Associates Inc, (FMA) is pleased to announce a new service for residents of Georgia and adjacent states. This service has been established to provide comprehensive neuropathologic diagnostic services.
A neuropathologic examination is a detailed autopsy of the brain performed by a neuropathologist. The goal is to identify the exact biological changes in the brain and determine the specific form of dementia or brain disease that a decedent has.
Please reach us at office@forensicmedicine.co if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Neuropathology autopsies require the brain to be submerged in formalin for two weeks to preserve and stabilize the tissue for a comprehensive examination. After the analysis, the brain is medically disposed of according to established protocols.
Yes. This examination can differentiate between Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, and over two dozen rare forms like prion and TDP-43-related diseases.
The brain is handled with great care and respect, and the findings are shared only with authorized family members.
No. The brain removal and preservation process typically takes less than 24 hours and will not interfere with traditional funeral practices.
Once the neuropathology examination, ancillary testing, and/or medical record review are completed, you will receive a copy of the completed report. Please call our office to schedule a phone conference if you would like the report thoroughly explained.
