Dr. Maria Elisa Smith

Dr. Maria Elisa Smith is an accomplished forensic pathologist with board certifications in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology. After earning her MD at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, she completed her residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and fellowship at the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Dr. Smith is passionate about teaching medical students, residents, and fellows in the classroom, at the microscope, and in the autopsy suite. Her special interest lies in the intersection of forensic pathology and infectious diseases. As a member of the DeKalb County Child Fatality Review Board, she is committed to the thorough medical investigation of pediatric deaths. She actively advances her field through leadership roles in professional organizations, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations at local, national, and international conferences. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, exploring the outdoors, and discovering new restaurants.
